Portrait Commissions

 Procedure

Because a portrait is an heirloom, clients are asked to give careful consideration when deciding on painting size, vertical or horizontal format, setting and clothing. These aspects as well as the type of pose desired are discussed in detail at initial meeting. All paint used is permanent and the materials are archival to ensure that clients and their families enjoy their painting for many years to come.

In our busy world, most people do not have time to pose and young children and pets usually have a hard time staying still. Sydney schedules a photo session with the subject that usually takes several hours and yields approximately 100 photographs. This session allows her to interact with the person to get a sense of personality, an essential part of the portrait process for her, and to capture many different poses. From the photographs, she creates a drawing that best portrays the subject as relaxed and natural, paying careful attention to overall composition and design elements. The drawing is approved by the client before any painting starts. At the time of approval, Sydney may need to sit with the subject for a short time to make requested changes as well as to make notes on color. A short sitting may also be required later in the painting process.
